How Do You Get Started with Meta Ads? 8 Steps to Setting Up Your First Campaign Right

Craftsoft Editorial Team9 min read

Short answer

To start Meta ads properly, use Ads Manager instead of “Boost post”. In order: create a Meta Business Portfolio, connect your Page and Instagram account, set up the Pixel and Conversions API, choose the campaign objective that fits your business (sales, leads or traffic), start with a broad audience and at least 3 different creatives, and collect data for the first 7 days without changing settings.

For many businesses, their first experience of Meta ads is Instagram’s “Boost post” button. A few hundred are spent, likes come in but sales don’t, and the conclusion is “Instagram ads don’t work for us”. Yet the problem isn’t the channel but the setup. This guide walks through, in order, 8 steps for building your first campaign on a professional foundation.

1. Create a Meta Business Portfolio

Manage ads from a business portfolio, not a personal account. In a business portfolio you bring your Facebook Page, Instagram account, ad account and Pixel together under one roof. When working with an agency or employees you give them only the access they need, and when someone leaves, your assets stay with you.

2. Set Up the Pixel and Conversions API

The Pixel reports actions taken on your website (page views, form submissions, purchases) to Meta. The Conversions API sends the same information from your server and recovers part of the data lost to browser restrictions. Without this setup, the algorithm can’t know which ad brought a business result and optimises only for people who click.

3. Choose the Right Campaign Objective

Meta finds the people most likely to achieve the objective you choose. Choose engagement and it finds people who like to like things; choose sales and it finds people likely to buy. That makes the objective the most important decision in a campaign.

  • If you sell online: the Sales objective, optimised for the purchase event.
  • If you collect quotes, appointments or applications: the Leads objective, with an instant form or a website form.
  • If you have a store, restaurant or service area: the Sales or Leads objective, with location targeting.
  • Launching a new brand: the Awareness objective, but manage sales expectations in a separate campaign.

4. Concentrate Your Budget, Don’t Split It

The most common beginner mistake is splitting a small budget across many campaigns and ad sets. No ad set reaches enough results to learn and none of them can optimise. At the start, one campaign, one or two ad sets and a few creatives are enough.

5. Keep the Audience Broad

Set location, language and an age limit if your product requires it, and use interest layers as little as possible. Meta’s algorithm learns from purchase signals and finds who converts better than your guesses can. The strongest way to steer the audience is now the creative: show who you are speaking to through visuals and copy.

6. Prepare at Least 3 Different Creatives

  • A vertical video that grabs attention in the first 3 seconds (9:16 for Reels and Stories).
  • A single image that clearly shows the product or the result of the service.
  • A carousel explaining features or steps.
  • A single message and a single call to action in each creative: “Buy now”, “Get a quote”, “Book an appointment”.

7. Prepare the Page the Ad Leads To

The first thing the person who clicks the ad encounters should be the continuation of the ad’s promise. Instead of sending them to the homepage, send them to the relevant product or service page. The page should open in under 3 seconds on mobile, have few form fields and show contact options (phone, WhatsApp) clearly.

8. Read the First Two Weeks Correctly

Once the campaign goes live, costs fluctuate in the first days; this is the learning phase. Don’t change the budget, objective or audience for the first 7 days. In the second week, decide at creative level: switch off the creative with a low click-through rate that brings no results, and produce more like the one that works. Make decisions by looking at real sales and form records alongside the results in the ad panel.

The goal of the first campaign is not to make a profit immediately but to learn which message works with which audience. That learning lowers the cost of every subsequent campaign.

You can manage Meta ads yourself, but measurement setup, creative production and weekly optimisation take serious time. At Craftsoft Creative we take on Meta ad management end to end, from account setup to creative production and reporting.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between boosting a post and Ads Manager?

Boosting is a quick way to get engagement on an existing post, but its objective, measurement and creative options are limited. Ads Manager lets you optimise for real business goals such as sales or forms, run tests and measure results. If you expect business results, use Ads Manager.

What is the minimum budget to start with Meta ads?

Technically you can start with very low daily budgets, but the algorithm needs enough results (conversions) to learn. A practical approach is to set aside a weekly budget of roughly 5–10 times your target cost per result and concentrate it in a single campaign.

Should I keep my target audience narrow or broad?

Today Meta’s algorithm generally performs better with broad audiences. The recommended approach is to set location, language and, if needed, an age limit, keep interest narrowing to a minimum and steer the audience through the creative itself.

Why was my ad rejected?

The most common reasons: phrases that directly address personal attributes (“Are you overweight?”), exaggerated promises, before-and-after images, prohibited or restricted product categories and inconsistency between the ad and the landing page. Read the advertising policies, correct the copy and resubmit it for review.
